In April 2002, Goodall was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace. Her other honours include the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, the French Legion of Honor, Medal of Tanzania, Japan's prestigious Kyoto Prize, the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Life Science, the Gandhi-King Award for Nonviolence, and the Spanish Prince of Asturias Awards. In her personal life, Jane was twice married, and had one son. She is now 82 and remains the only person ever to be adopted into a chimpanzee troupe.

Goodall credits the 1986 "Understanding Chimpanzees" conference, hosted by the Chicago Academy of Sciences with shifting her focus from observation of chimpanzees, to a broader and more intense concern with animal-human conservation, and she has been associated with numerous animal rights and welfare groups over the years. Goodall has received many honours for her environmental and humanitarian work, as well as others. She was named a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2004.

In 1962, she obtained a PhD degree in ethology. She became the eighth person to be allowed to study for a PhD at Cambridge University without first having obtained a BA or BSc. Her thesis was completed in 1965, titled "Behaviour of the Free-Ranging Chimpanzee", detailing her first five years of study at the Gombe Reserve. Slowly her ever increasing data became not only less criticized as unprofessional, but acclaimed as the definitive work on chimpanzee social and family interaction in the wild.

Goodall not only observed them to have unique and individual personalities, an unconventional idea at the time, but furthermore her research at Gombe Stream is best known to the scientific community for challenging two long-standing beliefs of the day: that only humans could construct and use tools, and that chimpanzees were vegetarians. The main scientific community was reluctant to accept her findings because she had no college education or formal training and was therefore unconventional.

Leakey, believing that the study of existing great apes could provide indications of the behaviour of early hominids, was looking for a chimpanzee researcher. He facilitated her study of primate behavior and anatomy, and then arrainged for Goodall to go to Gombe Stream National Park in July 1960. Without collegiate training directing her research, Goodall observed things that strict scientific doctrines may have overlooked. Sitting amongst them, she gradually gained their trust and acceptance.
