Thanks so much, NightOwl!! I love artists who work with wood! Something about how organic it is, really speaks to me! That was one reason I chose the scrolled wooden background for her; it doesn't look a lot like her art, but it reminded me of the feeling of a few pieces. :)

I looked up some of her sculptures and they are very cool! I'm always very fond of hearing about artists since art is one of my passions. This doll represents her very well and I love the used of d&d! Score: ACCURACY: 9 points, INTRICACY: 8 points, DESCRIPTION: 10 points! TOTAL: 27 points! :)

Thanks very much, Falak!! I was unfamiliar with her as well, although her work is quite distinctive! That's one of the reasons I love this game so much; I love to learn, and she was nothing if not colorful!! I share her fondness for ethnic clothing, but in a far less flamboyant manner!

While making a reputation with her art, she cultivated an extravagant personal lifestyle that included glamorous gowns, heavy face makeup and unconventional hairstyles and scarves. However, even after achieving financial stability, Nevelson lived simply, having little desire for material possessions. She is admired for designing exhibitions with pieces that not only as individual objects, but as parts of a whole. Nevelson, was an outstanding sculptor who redefined femininity in sculpture art.

She said: "My husband's family was terribly refined. Within that circle you could know Beethoven, but God forbid if you were Beethoven." A student of Hans Hofmann and Chaim Gross, Nevelson experimented with early conceptual art using found objects, and dabbled in painting and printing before dedicating her lifework to sculpture. Nevelson created works that illustrated how freedom of expression was a political act, creating many innovative installations. Her real success came in the late '50s.

Born in what is now Ukraine, she emigrated with her family to the United States in the early 20th century. Nevelson learned English at school, as she spoke Yiddish at home. By the early 1930s she was attending art classes at the Art Students League of New York, and in 1941 she had her first solo exhibition. Ironically, this was in the same year as her divorce from her husband, from whom she had been separated since 1933. They had one son together, Myron/Mike, who later also became a sculptor.
