Thanks bunches for the read through, Luna! I think Sevresina is exactly as infinitely forgetful as she is infinitely vague and infinitely cheerful... in public. Yet now she's shown Velen that there may be something beneath the surface.

Putting down the book, Madame du Leethe prepares to go. Velen, still a trifle bewildered, remains silent, but inclines his head as a gesture of respect. Just as she reaches the door, the lady looks back. In a very different voice, she says, "Velen, in the past, decisions were made. I didn't always agree. Yet, if you or someone you love should need assistance, you could do worse than to come to me." Then the mask is once more before her eyes and she smiles. "But you'll have to remind me."

"I must have had something important to say to you, my dove, don't you think?" the older woman beams at him. For a split second Velen receives a shadowy impression of a maelstrom of secrets, and then, once again, nothing. "I wonder what it could have been?" she coos, supremely unruffled. "How unfortunate that an absolutely terrible memory is one of the main prerequisites of a successful friendship with your mother... or at least I think it is... I might be confusing her with someone else."

It is as if a door has been slammed in his face. However, Velen can hardly accuse her of this. "Are you sure you didn't recall something helpful earlier? You did come here in a surreptitious fashion for some reason," he prompts gently, although he knows now that she won't let slip one speck of information more than she intends to. Smiling beatifically at him, Madame du Leethe pats his cheek with her gloved hand. "How marvelous of you to think of that!" she effuses. "You're such a good boy."

Surprised that she is even aware of his inquiries, yet willing to humor her, Velen asks the lady, "And do you know anything that might shed light on his murder? It would be rather long ago, you understand." "Oh! Well, in that case, I'm certain to have forgotten it! You're familiar with my wretched memory, my dove." Velen is virtually floored! She is lying! One moment he is positive of this, and the next instant he can sense nothing at all from a woman famed for her perpetual vagueness.

"My dove," she addresses him as she terms everyone, names being difficult for her, "I have heard that you have been asking positively everywhere for news of a dead artist... I forget who, exactly..." Madame Sevresina's thought seems to drift off. "Sobralin D'Esperis," Velen tells her helpfully, at a loss as to why she has come to visit him in this unconventional manner. "Oh yes!" she says brightly. "Of course. Thank you. So I have come to be interrogated. I'm quite looking forward to it."
