"Oh! But..." Catleya responds, equally quietly. "I can't. Not here! My mother can hear us, now, you know." "So?" asks Velen, not wanting Cat to try to rid herself of him, yet curious about her reasoning. "I... She likes you, I think. And tonight I need to win. We can quarrel later." Velen's face remains unintelligible, at least to Catleya. However, he reaches up and tucks a strand of hair pulled free from her plaits back behind her ear. "If that's what you want, of course," he says.

Still, Catleya is not pleased that apparently Velen knew about her private quest to investigate and avenge her true father's death. She cannot confront him about this in public, however; it would create a scene. It doesn't occur to Catleya that this would be a perfect excuse for the pretended spat with the young cleric that she has been waiting to stage. Standing at her elbow with an unreadable expression, Velen himself points this opportunity out in an undertone pitched for Cat's ears alone.

This barbed comment goes awry, however, for the sightless woman merely inclines her head regally and replies, "I would think you might, indeed, being such an astute and intelligent person." By this time, Catleya has recovered from the shock of hearing her father's name, and his full name at that, from Lady Deyandra. After all, Meretris had prepared her for the existence of her mother's lover being thrown in her face by social enemies. And now she knows more than she did before, ironically.

Lady Deyandra is momentarily taken aback. Laelinae continues, "I happened to mention to her how much I admired that poor man's aesthetic taste, before I lost my sight, and she has been searching for some of his lovely bas relief work for me to touch." She sighs wistfully. "How one does reminisce about one's youth at times! I'm sure you'll agree?" Deyandra does not like being reminded of her age, but gives her bird-like laugh. "Of course. I should have known that the interest was yours."
