"What is wrong with you?" she mutters, but it's a rhetorical question. "My turn," Velen counters. "Did you kill my father?" "Yes." Slowly he unwraps her fingers from around the knife. "You're making a hero of the wrong person. I didn't do what I did to help you or rescue your brother. It was only a job," she says flatly. "I know. Just as I know that you would have been marked for death if you had refused," he adds. "I was aware of the risks when I started on this path," she retorts.

"I should just kill you quietly and be done with this," Catleya whispers fiercely, her dagger at his throat. "You won't, however, because you don't want to," he asserts. "No," she admits, "I don't. But this is getting too complicated. Simple is always best." "I'm no threat to you, Catleya de Seleni. There's no need to kill me to protect yourself. That's why you're here, of course." "I... you knew I would come," she realizes. "Did you want me to?" He hesitates. "Yes, I think I did."

She half expects Velen to be awake and waiting for her, somehow, but he is sleeping peacefully when Catleya reaches his small chamber. Kneeling beside his bed, she dabs a few drops of the fluid onto his lips using the stopper, careful not to touch any herself. And suddenly he is awake! Recognizing the nature of the potion, Velen grabs Catleya by the braids and pulls her down to kiss her full on the mouth. But it is not a romantic gesture. "Now, I think we will both tell the truth," he says.

Creeping along passages forbidden to the lay community, Catleya is aware of dawn's first blush behind the colored glass windows. She does not even have the security of the dim mountain interior for cover. Ironically, one of the things which most obsessed Catleya before this mission was what to wear. She must seem to be in work clothes if seen outside of the Temple, so she carries a hollow "book" with a vial of powerful truth serum hidden in it, and into which her knife can vanish at need.
