| Rosa Louise McCauley Parks (Feb. 1913 – Oct. 2005) has been called by the United States Congress, "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement". Of herself, she said, "People always say that I didn't give up my seat because I was tired, but that isn't true... No, the only tired I was, was tired of giving in." Her birthday, February 4, and the day she was arrested, December 1, have both become Rosa Parks Day, commemorated in both California and Ohio. (continued in comments) |
