Margaret E. Knight (Feb. 1838 – Oct. 1914) was an American inventor. She has been called "the most famous 19th-century woman inventor" and "the female Edison". Because her father died when she was a little girl, she only attended school until the age of twelve, after that going to work in a cotton mill to help support the family. In 1868, while working in a paper bag factory, Knight invented a machine that folded and glued paper to form the flat bottomed brown paper bags familiar to shoppers today. (continued in comments) |
