Janet Collins (March 1917 – May 2003) was a ballet dancer, choreographer, and teacher. She performed on Broadway, in films, and appeared frequently on television. She was among the pioneers of black ballet dancing, one of the few classically trained Black dancers of her generation. Although she struggled with racism and her work was often hindered, she toured with her own original choreography which was widely respected. (continued in comments)

She began dancing at the age of four and received recognition for her work in Broadway shows like "Aida", "Carmen", and Cole Porter's "Out of This World". In 1951, she became the first African American to be hired full-time by the Metropolitan Opera in New York. After her retirement in her late forties, she joined the Benedictine order. Her cousin established the Janet Collins Fellowship, which provides support for aspiring ballet dancers.
