I have not portrayed her in her habit, but her signs as a saint are a Yellow Star of David on a Discalced Carmelite nun's habit, flames, a book. Many schools are named after her because of her teaching, and the numerous papers and treatises which she authored, as well as her translation of several important religious writings into German. Some of her most famous works include: "On the Problem of Empathy", "Essays on Woman", and "Spirituality of the Christian Woman".

She became a Discalced Carmelite nun in 1933. In 1938 she and her sister Rosa, by then also a convert, were sent to the Carmelite monastery in the Netherlands for their safety. Despite the Nazi invasion of that state in 1940, they remained undisturbed until they were arrested by the Nazis on 2 August 1942 and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where they died in the gas chamber a week later. Her posthumous cure by prayer of a child with acetaminophen poisoning led to her canonization.

She was born into an observant Jewish family, but was an atheist by her teenage years. Moved by the tragedies of World War I, in 1915 she took lessons to become a nursing assistant and worked in a hospital for the prevention of disease outbreaks. After completing her doctoral thesis in philosophy in 1916, her reading of the autobiography of the mystic St. Teresa of Ãvila caused her conversion, and she was baptized in January 1922. She taught for a time, but had to quit due to the Nazi regime.
