Now it was burned black, and blown outward in jagged shards like a dead and ugly flower made of thorns instead of petals. Three core pieces were left standing, leaning drunkenly against each other; one of these was my goal. "You'll be able to sense which still vibrates with the most energy much better as a genie," said the male ifrit. And he was incapable of falsehood. So, taking a deep breath and hoping that the process wouldn't hurt too much, I made a wish replacing him with me in the gem.

Accordingly, we traveled through the deserted streets into the center of the city. There, surrounded by arcane devices in a kind of plaza, was the stone I was to fetch this time. The genie of the ring had not given in to hyperbole; it was gigantic! Easily the height of a man, even in it's current state, and probably originally a yard in diameter, or more. It was impossible to say whether the power crystal had been clear or cloudy, or even what color it had been before the explosion, though.

After that, the plan was that I could put on the ring again myself, become my own Master, and complete my assigned mission to return with the power crystal of the dead city. I should've been paying closer attention to the blue djinn's exact wording, I suppose, however I was excited to be able to attain my dreams while not betraying the fragile female's trust in me, to not only comply with her wishes, but moreover to exceed them heroically, and incidentally do a fellow being a kindness as well.

It appeared that the genie of the ring was correct, and that once he had shown me the energy stone, I could wish him out of the diamond and myself into it. I was a bit dubious about the second part of that. "Don't you have to be a fey in order to reside within an enchanted jewel or whatever?" I had asked. But he replied that it was enough to be a worker of magic, and that my water conjuration skill was sufficient to allow me to bond with the gem. The male ifrit promised to summon me himself.
