It worried me, however, not that she was essentially treating me as expendable in wearing a ring that she was afraid even to touch, but that she might overheat during my absence. I must go carefully, but quickly. Thus, in very little time, I had returned to my previous location at the base of the rocky crevice. Slightly nervously, I unwrapped the great diamond and put on the ring. Nothing happened. Thea had forgotten to tell me to rub it, and my mind was hazily dreaming of her and riches.

I accepted this, although I did at least have the presence of mind to ask, "How, milady?" "You're a bright boy," the fair female praised me. "You'll understand soon enough." I thanked her for this new task and went back down the ravine again. This was confirmation that the diamond ring was magical, and not just some extremely expensive bauble stolen by a thief. It was also tantamount to saying, at least in my mind, that the passage I had discovered did indeed lead to a city full of wealth.
