First, however, I must prove my trustworthiness by bringing her the merest token, a trifle, a ring... It was located in a cave at the end of this ravine, where its previous owner had suffered a nasty fall and broken his neck, she warned me, 'so do be careful of your step.' After that, we would be free to move on to her true goal, the giant crystal which had once powered an entire city, but all of which, gem and city alike, was now gone and forgotten, buried beneath the shifting desert sands.

I took her by the easiest ways, in gentle stages and always at night, since she did not seem to mind being cold, to the destination of her choice, deep in the desert where only the nomads go, and they wander seldom. There, in a ravine that looked much like any other ravine, Thea confided to me that she was looking for a rich treasure, which she would share with me, but which she was too frail to fetch herself, although she alone knew its location. Therefore, I must retrieve this precious item.

Never did it occur to me that this level of slavish devotion was abnormal... or slavish at all. Neither did I question such a fine lady traveling into the desert alone, and with almost no baggage. Everything she carried with her was designed to help keep her cool: reflective awnings for shade, two folding baths, cloths of white silk to swaddle herself in, stones that were exceedingly difficult to heat and retained the chill of desert night far into the day... and of course, me, with my gift.

She had work for me, and I was delighted that I could be of service to this lovely vision of femininity. Only I could help her, for she had a journey to make into the vast desert, and she absolutely must not overheat, or risk burning her alabaster skin. This seemed entirely reasonable to me, and I had no qualms about turning my back on the friends I was beginning to make among the caravan hands. Thea must be sheltered, protected, assisted, and admired... possibly even worshiped as an angel.
