This particular carpet does not fly, but is instead magically camouflaged to look like one of the traps for Ifrit found all throughout Zephyr's rambling home, and it successfully hides Smoke Cat, Syura, and Summer Wind who have just reached young Ifrit's quarters again. Remaining for long beneath a thick carpet in the desert heat, however, is highly uncomfortable, and it is with great joy that the trio receive the news from camp that Zephyr has gone boiling off towards the southern horizon.

Only pausing to communicate to Springing Doe and the others what they have learned about young Ifrit's whereabouts, Song has retreated to the blue jewel so that the supernaturally fast Ifrit the Hunter can take off running the moment Zephyr is safely within her home. Thus she is a bit winded, but easily back at the camp site in time for her mother to overlook her as mortal. The other three women, once warned that Zephyr's plots are falling through, take shelter under a large enchanted carpet.

This temporary lapse in their blue color is due to the fact that the genie gem is in use at the moment housing Song the Wolf Calling. As long as she stays inside the stone, she projects no fey aura. The rescuers have planned for the contingency that something would go wrong, if not for the specific problem of adolescent Ifrit vanishing from her bottle. That they now know how the girl is being restrained is moderately fortuitous. But it put Zephyr into a towering rage; hence, they scrambled.

Of course, Zephyr doesn't bother to examine the mortals too closely. It is enough for her that both are female, and one has a dark complexion while the other one is paler. They wear the right clothes, although in desert robes everyone looks much alike, and have the same tent. If the purple fey had not been so dismissive, she might have noticed that neither Springing Doe nor the dyed Ifrit is precisely the shade of the woman she is pretending to be, and that Ifrit's eyes are bright crimson.

At least something can be salvaged from the situation; another Ifrit is practically at her door. Fully prepared now to pay even an exorbitant price for her daughter, Zephyr hastens back to their sandy meeting place. But the bounty hunter is gone without a trace, as is the captive Ifrit. The only djinn aura within as large an area as the purple woman is able to scan, belongs to the slave boy. Nothing living is within striking distance of her home except the two human women who came before.
