Just as the lovers sit down to luncheon, two groups of officials come banging on the door. The first, by arrival, is the cabal, and they have come to question Madam Jade. The second, who actually set out first, are the Dawn Gate guardsman, who have come to take Blue Turtle into custody. Through this maelstrom glides the Queen, managing to be fully in control of both brangling factions at once. "Sister," says Jade Black Rose, "the best and worst of news; the girl is found; but she is dead!"
