Taking another sip restored Mourning Cloak sufficiently to stand, and threaten, "Even without my wand, I have beaten you all! It is over now. Except for the screaming!" The sorcerer drank once more, and then set the glass back on the table. However, he was already beginning to chill further and stiffen from the overdose his son had arranged. And then, with the chiming of sweet bells, Princess Frost Flower appeared. "NO!" shrieked Silver Dagger, and quite deliberately drained the glass.

Meanwhile, Mourning Cloak's wounds have been healing after their own fashion, but much less rapidly than before because there are simply so many of them. Therefore, between attacks by the huge cat that is now his elder daughter, the sorcerer spews out just enough magic to hold the other mortals at bay, and drags himself towards his bedside table. He must have that glass of fluid, his preservative and restorative potion, which will enable him to live forever. The devil he called up said so.

Out of the corner of her eye, Smoke Cat sees fox ears and a tail going to the south door, maybe to try to help revive Star Hawk and Grey Owl. Silver Fox can still think; the confusion does not effect his nonhuman brain. Swiftly the shaman transforms into her own spirit animal and the situation becomes clear. With one mighty swipe of her claws she hamstrings Mourning Cloak, and leaps away before the sorcerer can muster a reprisal. These hit and run tactics are the delaying action she needs.
