Or at least the space is empty of Mourning Cloak, although there are many signs that he has been living here, practicing more than a little alchemy, and has recently had a monstrous temper tantrum. Debris is everywhere: broken glass, twisted metal, blasted stone, and charred bits of what were probably pillow feathers settling gently to the floor. The only areas spared have been Silver Dagger's fairly luxurious bed, and a small table near it. Even the ceiling has streaks of lightning damage.

The two sisters lead, each providing conjured firelight for her group. Next are the bowmen, since they must strike fast and hard, then fade back, or risk shooting their own people. If it comes to knife work, it is agreed that they should retreat if they can and devise a different strategy. Lastly Jonas and Kanu bring up the rear, as the little grey fox has disappeared into the shadows ahead, lead by both blood and scent. Each company finds the cistern at approximately the same time. Empty.

Within that circumference, there is only one room recorded which is both large enough and stable enough to suit the sorcerer's needs. It is an abandoned cistern. They decide that they will still divide up, as there are two good entrances. As for Silver Fox, he will accompany Summer Wind's team, for the boy insists on aiding them to kill Mourning Cloak. The catacombs prove to be dryer than expected, and although the men have to duck quite often, it is high enough in places to walk upright.

As a natural shape-shifter, Silver Fox could have transformed out of the figurine he was trapped in at any time, but only as far as a fox; without his human body back in the Central Kingdom, he needs a puppet of some kind to assume boy shape. During most of the journey, he was kept in a padded box, so he cannot lead them directly to Mourning Cloak's lair except by the use of his nose. However, when shown the map of the search area in the catacombs, he is able to indicate a much tighter circle.
