"He would need at least one mage as an accomplice, would he not?" asks Kanu. "Yes, that's where my sister and I come in," Smoke Cat Watching explains. "We're his daughters and he wants us back," adds Summer Wind, "for several reasons." Jonas contributes, "We think he does not know the whole apparatus required to make the tunnel function, or he would have either attempted to entrap his children by now, or have left here for the return journey to his mountain cave in the far north and east."

"Slim," the newliweds reply in tandem. "The timing is too convenient," Jonas says. "Also, if he knows the secret or can piece it together, he can stay in his cave while casting magic far afield," Smoke Cat adds grimly. Kanu, who has been filled in on the doorway spell as pertinent, joins them then.

"I know it was Silver Dagger," Jonas reports later to his wife, "but I very much doubt that he recognized me. I was with a group of very drunk men, acting as intoxicated as they were, and you don't examine the faces of such roving revelers too closely." Smoke Cat closes her eyes in resignation as her surmises have been confirmed. "You don't suppose he'll be happy with the wand and whatever else, and just leave us alone?" she asks to have it said. "No. It's a matter of pride for him now."

The consensus is overwhelming that Morning Cloak is somewhere in the city, but no one knows exactly where, and no one in their right mind would want to know where. He pops up here and there, and then vanishes. Jonas is cautioned that the man is a lunatic, a sorcerer, and one of those idiots who come along periodically, wanting to rule the world. It is not until near dawn that Jonas sees a dark figure in a white cloak dash down a hidden stair, leading to a corridor, accessing the catacombs.

While Jonas isn't a thief, he can use a set of lockpicks. Although he isn't a murderer, he owns an assassin's dagger. He has... a diverse and intriguing variety of acquaintances. These he goes to visit now, some of whom even know him as "Jonas", and all of them wish to commiserate... er, congratulate him on his nuptuals. This takes him through some rather dark alleys and exposes him to whispers that would otherwise not come to his ears. They say Mourning Cloak is odd, and actively avoided.
