However, the Cherokee made great attempts to try to assimilate with the incoming white people, to adopt their ways and fashions, and thereby coexist with them in peace. They took to hats to the extent that the Osage, confronted with the relocated Cherokee, called them the "Thing on its Head People". Traditionally also, a maiden would not have been carrying a bow except in extreme circumstances.

Cherokee women often wore their hair down, or in two braids. Feathers were used both as decoration and as a signal in the Oklahoma region to where the Cherokee were relocated after the long march of the Trail of Tears. An upwards pointing feather was seen as warlike and aggressive, whereas a hanging feather was a sign of peace. Blue was a highly prized color for its rarity and symbolism, and much beading of jewelry and down the sleeves and belt was often blue.
