Chatan had a fairly normal childhood. He was happy playing with his older siblings and cousins until he was about 10. Then his mother remarried, hoping that having a man in the house would provide a good male role model for her youngest son. Chatan's stepfather, however, believed that a boy should be tough, and would beat him with an axe handle. Until Chatan grew too big at 14, and took the axe handle away from him, and hit him with it until he died. After that Chatan had to leave home.
