@Niobesnuppa > the only Finnish folk costume (if it can even be called that) is the Ancient Finn garb, reminiscent of the Viking times. That one looks quite medieval-ish and has some awesome jewellery! And you musn't forget the Finnish "mantra" > "...simplicity is beautiful..." This is the inheritance of very stern Lutheran traditions that regarded decorations as "devilish"... :P

This is so cool! The lace on the hat, and the puffiness of the sleeves is great detail. and then the dress design and the shoulder wrap - you rock!

Really? That's odd, I thought Norway used to be a very poor country before we found oil, but I guess Finland may have been even poorer. Mind you, peasants in Norway didn't wear the detailed bunads for everyday use, these were only for special occasions. There are everyday bunads here as well, which are still worn by some farmers even to this day. They look a lot like the Finnish costumes, very simple and plain.

Ah, Niobesnuppa, it comes down to peasants and lords! Norwegians and Swedes are regarded as "lords and ladies" by olden time Finnish standards, therefore the Finnish folk costumes are those of lowly peasants and quite simple. Finland never had its own nobility and that's why it doesn't have a tradition of "fancy" attire. :D :D :D Okay, I'll stick my pretend-Greek heritage!

Inanna, based on my Google search, the Finnish ones do look quit plain... I guess it could be because here in Norway we were these thing at least once a year, whereas in Finland they probably don't have much of a tradition when it comes to folk costumes. The Norwegian bunads are all based on 1700's and 1800's wedding dresses for farmers, so that's why they all have such complex embroidery.
