| As midnight approaches, guests mill silently around the castle halls, wondering where their mysterious hostess could possibly be and when she would open the doors to the ballroom. One of the guests admires the decorations, and reaches out to brush her fingers across the rich green drapery. "I wouldn't touch that, if I were you." The guest yelps and turns quickly, nearly spilling her wine. "M-my apologies," she whispers, curtsying instinctively before the beautiful lady in rich Victorian dress. The lady smiles darkly. "The green is vintage. Victorian. The color comes from arsenic." The guest gasps slightly, stepping away from the wall. "I-is it safe?" "Most certainly not. The danger is part of the fun, is it not?" Still smiling, the lady calls out to the guests meandering around the corridors. "If you will follow me, the ballroom is just this way!" She turns briskly on her heel and sweeps down a side hallway, lifting a candle from its sconce and using it to light the way as she (cont.) |
