Find out, what you like, what you don't like, what works well for you and go from there. Once you have the basics down you can then move onto more complex designs. You can also experiment with different looks and textures and even try different types of lighting and shadow. Happy Dolling!! :)

Finally, a tip to anyone starting out with shading: practice is very important. When I started I did a lot of trial and errors. I'm not an artist and I'd never done dresses before so it took me a long time to develop my process.I am still learning, and perfecting, and practicing. Sometimes you'll notice in my dolls descriptions I write testing. That is really how I learn. By testing. You can upload ones you are happy with and if you really don't like a test doll no need to save it.

At this point, I'm calling it done. You can choose your background, add your favorite pet, or anything else you desire. For a dress like this, on the simpler side I always finish making it in one go instead of doing it over the course of days or hours.

Optional: you can add something to the shoe but I didn't. You can choose to add highlight to her hair. I picked yellow, set to greatest transparency. And Added to parts of her hair based on how I imagine the light to reflect off it.

I want it to be simple instead of busy. I choose 3 pieces to use. The bottom looked a tad too plain so I added purple ruffle in the medium shade that matches the base dress color. Only after adding the ruffles I use the bead to decorate the bottom of the skirt. It adds definition and balance with the top design.

I could go with dark purple or light purple for a matching or complimentary look on the dress. I could go for silver and add a touch of charm. But I'm opting for gold to add a bit of boldness and a nice contrast.

After blending and smoothing to your desired effect you now have the fabric of your choice. Next decide on decorations on the dress. I always consider gold and silver as well as the color of the dress as possibilities.

I picked the medium purple, set transparency to the greatest. Using the large circle and the medium circle I cover top to bottom the center on the dress. Pay close attention to softening the highlighted right side.

Step 4: my final step in this case is used to smooth out my fabric. I wanted a dress with less emphasis on highlights and a deeper purple tone. So I had to tone down the right side highlights by going over the center and partly on the right with the base dress color.
