Uncle Anduin is devoting his energies to keeping the ship's timbers intact, especially to reinforcing the main mast. Spume is rising higher than the hull of the Firebrand, but water isn't currently streaming across the deck, solely because Sable, the renegade cabal sister, is forbidding it. Inside the women's cabin, there is still light; the lantern blew out from the insidious drafts long since, but it is White Rose's special talent to be able to generate a glow. All the girls are terrified.

Of course, the time to have battled the storm was at its conception, before it had time to build force and momentum. That being impossible, Uncle Anduin and Sable are only able to contend with the worst of the tempest's effects, and that is merely a delaying action. Still, the more of the weather that blows over and past the Firebrand, the better. Conditions worsen. The ship is done with tossing about perilously now, instead riding up watery hills and down into valleys between giant waves.

As the first bolt of lightning crackles across the sky, the facade of the prim Governess vanishes, and Sable is suffused with a wild energy. She addresses herself to calming the waves as best as she can. And between her efforts and those of Uncle Anduin, there is a perceptible difference. The fury of the storm seems to abate just a little, even as the rain clouds break open and it begins to pour, while flashes of lightning rend the sky overhead and thunder growls and grumbles louder and louder.
