He's given the title "Ship's Boy" which he gathers is a mixture of mascot and lowest ranking person on board. Sometimes Makto is invited to dine with the captain and officers in his cabin. It is impossible not to like Uncle Anduin, of course, and the scruffy boatswain's mate is a good man trying hard to disguise that fact. More often, though, he eats with the rest of the crew members, listening to every story about his father that he can glean. Irayo is a popular figure and highly respected.

However, as soon as he's done with the mop, the captain reappears and gives Makto a much more extensive tour of the ship, explaining the generalities of how things work, and answering specific questions that he doesn't feel are stupid. Then, true to his expectations, the boy is sent to the galley and ordered to chop tubers. Still, Irayo's son is having a wonderful time, and has never enjoyed chopping tubers or mopping half so much. Soon, he's getting along quite well with most of the crew.

The proposed arrangement is acceptable to Captain Cross, the former commander, and with almost no delay, Makto finds himself with his small pack stowed away belowdecks, and putting to sea on a real privateer, a ship that legally hunts other pirates, both foreign and domestic. Captain Southern Cross personally takes Irayo's son under his wing. "This is starboard," he tells the boy, "and this is port. The floor is called a deck, and mopping, is called swabbing. Welcome aboard. Get to work."

"I know you must have many friends at Bowing Tree whom you could stay with for a while." "I do," Makto says, unconsciously sounding much like his father, "but if it is permissible, I would like to spend this time learning more about you and the life you lead instead. The Firebrand will be short a man. I cannot take your place as second in command, but I can chop tubers in the galley, if nothing else." Irayo tilts his head, considering. "That is an astute request. I will ask the captain."

"You see my son," Irayo elaborates, "your mother and I have been separated for too long to know right away how to find one another again. We need time to heal the bond that stretches between us, time to make it strong and vital once more, time to draw closer together..." Makto interrupts him there. "Time alone. I understand." His father gazes deep into the boy's eyes. "You do. Thank you. Even if we all agree that we can share a home, there is still much to be discussed and decided upon."
