whoever took the gem will simply leave them there. The gem itself is able to show the location of the hidden treasure and without her gem, a Vouivre will wither and eventually, die. Being condemned by the wealth they have, that is how the Vouivres were pushed to the egde of extinction. Eolynn is considered to be among last of her kind, she dislikes humans and seldon visits the human realms. She's a pretty tough one, and has serious trusting issue.

The gem stones were like birth marks, and all Vouivres were born with them. The stones serve as links and keys to the treasure they were assigned to protect. And the masters of the treasures can inflict certain control over Vouivres through that gem. So the removal of the stone is like hang up your bosses' phone calls during your maternity leave. But that consequentially makes them weak and vulnerable, and if a Vouivre is separated too long with her gem, she'll die...

It is never clear that whether Vouivres and Lindwyrms are the different forms of females and males of the same race, or the minor kin to dragons are able to interbreed with each other. After mating, the Vouivres will hatch their eggs in the warm spring. A Vouivre can lay no more than three eggs at one birth, the winged females are all Vouivres and the fined and tailed males are all Lindwyrms. During their mating seasons, Vouivres will remove the gem stone on their foreheads...
