The four circle things represent four of the five elements in Chinese/Taoist mythology. Green is wood, representing east, the spring season. Red is fire, representing south, the summer season. White is metal (sometimes extend to lightning), representing west, the autumn season. Black is water, representing north, the winter season. My intentions was to do the four constellation spirits that guard the elements/directions, but...I lack the skill...
