| Born in 1806, she was captured with about 10 years by the Apsaalokees (Crows) from her tribe, the Atsina (Gros Ventres). It's assumed her birth name was Pine Leaf. She was adopted from a crow warrior who lost his sons. The girl had no interest in the duties of the women, and although she continued wearing female clothing, she learned the duties of men like hunting and fighting from her adoptive father. After his death she took charge of his lodge. Being a warrior, she gained fame, wealth and a reputation of protecting her people and raiding her enemies for horses. She also was skilled as a military strategist, earned for her deeds the name Bíawacheeitchish - Woman Chief and represented her lodge at the council of chiefs. It is said that she took 4 wives, and she was a war chief for over 20 years. Woman Chief was killed a few years after successfully negotiating peace with the tribe of her birth, from warriors of the Gros Ventre. #nativeamerican #history |
