Moving Robe Woman (Thašína Máni, *1854) was a Hunkpapa-Lakota, who fought during the Battle of Little Big Horn to avenge her brother. Searching for turnips near the camp, she saw a cloud of dust rise near the Little Bighorn river. She returned to the camp and found her brother dead and her father preparing for battle. When the soldiers fired into their village, instead of fleeing she took a relative's revolver and shot a known scout who betrayed them. Then she painted her face red, braided her hair and joined the warriors. She lead the counterattack against the US Cavalry and fought in the Battle of Little Big Horn. Rain-in-the-Face described it: "'Behold, there is among us a young woman!' I shouted. 'Let no young man hide behind her garments!' I knew that would make these young men brave! The woman was Moving Robe, whose brother had just been killed. Holding her brother's war staff over her head, and leaning forward upon her charger, she looked as pretty as a bird." #nativeamerican |
