It was doubly annoying to discover that the Dead Sea site was uncomfortably close to the major city of Jerusalem. There were cars, and airplanes that rumbled overhead, and, by Apophis, so many humans that the chaos god might almost be pleased with it. So far Kemat and her lackeys were the only ones to have physically laid eyes on it, but the rest of the remaining Iretmoses had heard of the abominable metropolis from the tortured archaeologists, and one thing had been clear to all; it must go!

...except for the serpent people sleeping beneath it. Or, more accurately, the Iretmoses were in hibernation in a dimensional rift opened at the bottom of that body of water, where the lay lines of the earth's magical energy intersected most strongly, closest to the heart of the planet. Access to the Hibernatorium, however, was gained almost at the top of the valley, and that threshold was what had been unearthed by human archaeologists after the water had receded enough to make a dig feasible.

Ah, there it was, Tel Aviv, the port city to which they were headed. It had come as an unpleasant shock to the Snake-Eyed that the gateway to their Hibernatorium, located symbolically, and for various reasons difficult to explain to a non-mage, in the lowest valley of the earth, had come to be covered by water during the passing millennia. The Dead Sea, it was called by humans, a stranded bit of ocean that had gained in salinity as it evaporated until nothing could survive within its depths...

Ironically, she'd been prepared to negotiate with, and even pay, that deaf old Witch for the magic-nulling manacles. Gold was as dross to Kemat; all she cared for was power. However, apparently the crone... whom they'd been forced to shout at to be heard, much to the Archmage's irritation... felt similarly about riches, and had categorically refused to sell. She was also blind as a cavefish, though, and it had been a simple act to subvert her primitive ward spells and steal the bonds from her.

They had obtained the litella bonds easily, thanks to Kemat's intercession, which freed Toth to turn his full attention to the sailboat, and the voyage, from what Tashmitum said, was much smoother as a result. The Oakenling boy was currently shackled to the mast, to prevent him from trying to cause trouble now that he'd been permitted to regain consciousness. He refused to speak to the Iretmoses, which for the moment suited the Archmage... she hated noise... yet she'd make him talk eventually.
