Some more in depth exploration had revealed that the gifted artist was also a talented thief, but one who habitually bragged about his exploits in the relative safety of the underworld. That, to the investigator's thinking, provided a satisfactory motive. Sobralin had talked too much, and therefore been removed. Case closed.

Granted, it wasn't a very good alibi, but then, most people's weren't. The one piece of evidence which the police officer was certain hadn't been tampered with was the murder weapon, a very thin stiletto with a blackened blade and the characteristic Chandratte sickle moon inscribed on the handle. Moreover, the police magician had stated that the last person whose hand had held the dagger had been a member of that Syndicate, although she couldn't say anything more definite about the suspect.

The crime scene had been thoroughly disturbed and compromised by the individuals who sought to calm Laelinae, which hadn't been remotely effective. She had then run out into the night, and quite a few more people had followed suit to try to find the frantic woman and bring her home. Thus, gathering and interviewing the people present at the time of the murder had been a nightmare; the officer wasn't even sure he knew who they all were. Haraemeis du Lac was on the list, but he'd had an alibi.
