"It's all right, my Cat," Velen softly reassures her. "Deva and I will find a way to get you out of the Syndicate alive, and neither Meretris nor your mother will ever know what you've done unless you feel the need to tell them." Catleya glances up from her plateful of fruit. "Do you still believe that, Velen?" she asks. "I do. Although I could wish we'd made more progress at inventing some good ideas." He smiles and tilts her chin up, but doesn't kiss her yet. "Or even mediocre ideas."

"Also, Prem Deva says that the recollection was poorly hidden, which means that any attempt to manipulate the content would be immediately obvious... for technical reasons that I didn't quite understand," Catleya admits. She frowns. "I believe I can persuade Meretris to act as a witness if Haraemeis can be arrested. My step-father would rather suffer some embarrassment than permit a murderer to go free." Cat sighs again, pondering what the man who raised her would think of her profession.

"I know, but it provides corroboration, and establishes a pattern of illegal behavior."

"Possibly he lacked the nerve at that point," the young assassin speculates. "It requires a great deal of... resolution... to extinguish a life that Nocturnia has bestowed. And du Lac was hardly older than a boy, then." Velen accepts this assessment calmly. "Or perhaps he thought it might be worthwhile to wait and see if his cousin managed to marry a wealthy heiress, as I'm sure his family planned for him. After all, Meretris would still have had little money of his own as an adolescent."
