Meretris is, in fact, at home, and willing to see his purported daughter's childhood playmate. Deva starts by taking out a curiosity to show him; it's some type of portable chronometer, entirely mechanical, and quite shiny. Catleya can hardly keep her own gaze off of it, and she's fully aware of what's happening. The Kuromi girl's eyes seem to grow large and dominate the room. She never speaks or chants anything unusual, but gradually the young spy guides the conversation to strange fevers.

The Kuromi share a talent for magical manipulation of mind and memory with their Noirfey neighbors, although the techniques are different, and Prem Deva is particularly skilled. She can hypnotize a person so subtly, but completely, that they never realize their recollections have been tampered with. It is her plan, with Cat's cooperation, to lead Meretris's thoughts back to that sickness and discover the truth behind the rumors. Catleya has no objection, since this won't harm her step-father.
