Then, suddenly, Sevresina touches an ornament on a shelf, and the wall slides smoothly open. Silent for the first time since their introduction, Madame motions Velen and Cat inside. As the panel closes, the older woman settles eagerly on a sofa, one foot tucked under her. "Now, my doves," she says in quite a different voice, "instinct informs me that you have come for my help. This room is private. What trouble... exactly... are you in that you require the assistance of the Secret Police?"

"Yes, my doves, you must have tea, and some pastries, and rest after your journey, and be comfortable, and then you can tell me every little thing that has happened since I saw you last. Won't that be nice?" Privately, Catleya wonders how the woman converses without seeming to pause for air. All the while, however, she is leading her young charges this way and that, flitting about and backtracking, apparently wandering at random through her spacious mansion. It is extremely well decorated.

Sevresina is effusively delighted to see them, and immediately launches upon a stream of consciousness burble of chatter in which various inanities vie with her desire to provide tea for her guests. This is exactly like her public reputation, and Catleya feels a powerful urge to strangle the overenthusiastic woman. Nobly, the young assassin suppresses this impulse; Velen has warned her that there is much more to Madame du Leethe than meets the eye. Or, at least, he strongly suspects there is.
