Fortunately, Shooting Star is herself a brilliant swordswoman and able to match Jade River's sudden skill. For a while they fight in silence, the clash of metal providing the only noise, and Estel gets the distinct impression that her opponent believes that he's toying with her, that he can finish her off at any time he selects. As that thought passes through her mind, Jade River informs her, "I have no particular animosity towards you personally, Ambassador, so I will grant you a quick death."

Estel is roughly six feet from Amen when the boy makes the derogatory statement about Jade River's mental stability. Apparently either that's as close as she was ever meant to get, or the man is touchy about his emotional health, because that is when he chooses to attack. Shrieking like... well, like a madman,... the northern courtier rushes from the treeline with steel drawn and ready. His first few blows are fierce but wild, however then he seems to regain his focus and start to duel expertly.

And now I make good bait." "He's still willing to talk. That's a good sign," the captain says, wanting to believe it. "I think he just wants to gloat before he murders us all," is the desert lad's opinion, however. "He's... the man doesn't sound quite sane to me."
