The thing that the joint rulers find most disturbing is that their spies have heard no trace of this rumor. Irayo explains that the man who told him probably wouldn't have spoken at all had he not been a member of the Firebrand's crew, and therefore, at least formerly, a pirate. This mollifies King Galad a little bit, but Queen Rian has already jumped ahead to the matter of verifying the content of this gossip. Has there been, or is there now, a storm over the route of Shooting Star's ship?

This facilitates getting a royal audience astronomically, although the couple must still wait a couple of days. It seems that a new ambassador is coming from some northern country and much is happening to make ready for her arrival. Finally, however, the day dawns and Irayo and a rather nervous Nitram appear before the double crown to state their purpose. Irayo is open and honest about the source of their knowledge being whispers heard by "a friend of a friend", but his data remains alarming.

For the moment, Irayo has managed to reassure his semi-estranged wife that their son is undoubtedly safe because the Firebrand has been through all kinds of weather, and yet made it through intact. He believes this strongly, and his faith convinces Nitram. Still, neither one of them is entirely sanguine about the matter. They would feel better if it were properly investigated. Luckily, Irayo also knows King Galad and Queen Rian personally, if not as intimately as Shooting Star and Silver Fox do.
