"Anne of Green Gables" is such a great book-series and I love this little red haired girl! ("... But if you call me Anne please call me Anne spelled with an E." --- "What difference does it make how it's spelled?" asked Marilla... "Oh, it makes such a difference. It looks so much nicer. ...) ^^

Montgomery worked as a teacher in various Prince Edward Island schools. Though she did not enjoy teaching, it afforded her time to write. Beginning in 1897, she began to have her short stories published in magazines and newspapers. In 1911, having given up on romantic love but feeling that "marriage was a necessary choice for women in Canada," she married Ewan Macdonald with whom she had three sons. Unfortunately her husband suffered from religious melancholia, and her main solace was writing.

In some ways, Montgomery's life paralleled that of her fictional heroine, Anne. Her mother died before she was 2 years old, and her father gave custody to her maternal grandparents. They raised her very strictly, and she was often alone; as a consequence, Lucy Maud developed a rich imagination. In 1893, she attended Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown, and obtained a teacher's license. She completed the two-year program in one year, going on to study literature at Dalhousie University.

Montgomery's work, diaries and letters have been read and studied by scholars and readers worldwide, and her Anne of Green Gables books were turned into a popular, 3-part Canadian miniseries that starred Megan Follows. Her other fiction series include the Emily of New Moon trilogy and The Story Girl books. She was made an officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1935. She has also twice appeared on Canadian stamps, first in 1975 as an author, and in 2008 to honor her literary achievements.
