Deyandra is somewhat disappointed. She had been hoping for a telling reaction, some embarrassment, or at least annoyance, on the part of each of the de Selenis. What she perceives, however, is a mildly reminiscent smile on Laelinae's lips, a vague boredom in Meretris's face, and no response at all from Catleya. However, the younger woman is, for a time, deprived of words; she is more stricken than she shows. Her mother steps into the breach for her, even as Velen glides softly up behind Cat.

Accordingly, she waits until there is a lull in the chatter, and a temporary halt for musicians and dancers alike to rest. Admiring her own nails, Lady Deyandra strolls up to her hostess. Catleya is, at that moment, in a clump of people fortuitously near both her parents, and within earshot of Velen. "Do you know, my dear," she says in her lilting voice, "I was recently asked by my son about several obscure artists? Among them, Sobralin Ofelie D'Esperis. I had no idea you were a collector."
