"What about you? Are you happy?" Catleya asks suddenly, surprising herself, since she doesn't normally pry into what she feels are personal matters. "No. But the healing crystals that I wear have helped with that," he confesses. "I'm training to be a Healer, although right now I'm studying at home." "I hope that will make you happy, Nimuel. Or at least peaceful and content." "Thank you. I've taken up enough of your time, though. You should go smile at Velen, now, before he misses you."

"You don't even know me!" says Catleya in consternation. "I know Velen. And he likes you. That's enough," Nimuel replies. "You make him happy, I think. He's not happy often. Peaceful, and content, since he became a cleric, but not happy." The boy reaches out and touches her gloved hand. "You're not happy very often, either, are you?" "Happiness is very fleeting," is all Catleya responds. She has the feeling she's being read right through the cloth. "Yes, but it's worth it anyway."

"Why? Don't you believe the rumors?" Catleya counters. Nimuel merely looks at her. "All right," she admits softly, "I like him." "I thought you might," the younger brother beams. "He's a good person, Catleya de Seleni. I have orders from my mother to keep you away from him as much as possible tonight so that it appears as though Velen is bored with you already. But it wouldn't work, even if I wanted to try." "Are you always so forthcoming?" Catleya asks. "No," he says. "I like you."

"The hairstyle alone took hours, of course," Nimuel tells Catleya as soon as his mother is out of earshot. "She's so vain about that pale blue streak." Catleya doesn't know quite what to say in response to this confidence on Nimuel's part. She chooses to be equally candid. "Mine took quite a long time as well. I, obviously, didn't want to wear something simple. Not in front of all of these guests." "Oh, that's all right. Mother is just being snide. Do you like my brother?" the boy asks.
