one of the happiest wives I know of had an arranged marriage. she came from a progressive family so she had been allowed to meet him once or twice and correspond with him while she was in Germany for her nursing school---did NOT like the duties she'd have in India if she'd been a nurse there--wonderfully complex medicine like picking up the towels after Doctor had dried his hands and just dropped the towel on the floor!! We got lucky; she and her husband came here where she was an excellent RN.

Wow, I'm thrilled that you like my portrayal of Catleya's family!!! Thank you so much!!! I didn't want to give her mother exclusively tragedy in her life, and a platonic relationship just seemed like a great way to do that.

Their family life sounds caring, yet at the same time very complicated....I LOVE IT! I also appreciate how you showed that not all marriages are not loveless even when not for true love: platonic caring is entirely possible! Plenty of spouses are friends while not being in love: Love is different from marriage to them. And they respect that. Thank you for capturing that!

This figure, Catleya's true father, is cloaked in mystery. She spent much of her childhood coaxing her mother to tell her of him, but Laelinae has always let fall only small details, one at a time, as they are precious jewels to her. Ironically, it is from Meretris that Catleya learned of his existence at all, because, he said, he was concerned that she would hear of her mother's lover through the whispers of his political enemies, even though she was widely accepted as his legitimate child.

She loves the scents of her home garden, carefully maintained by Meretris himself, as well as the more exotic smelling blooms brought to her daily by Catleya from other hollow mountains. Laelinae, however, has discovered that the blind are allowed many eccentricities that would be considered subject for spiteful gossip in other ladies. For example, she always wears the same earrings, simple silver hoops. Although she has not confided this, Catleya believes them to be gifts of her doomed cour.
