For a moment, Syeha thinks Amen is looking at her as though he's going to kiss her, but a second or two later it appears that she was mistaken. There's no awkwardness like she would expect if he'd changed his mind, but then, she's never really been kissed, so Syeha is not sure. Mentally Amen is kicking himself for almost crossing a line, but he is resolved not to let it show. Yet he keeps hold of her hand, as though that were a casual thing, hoping that perhaps it will become normal for them.

And really, Amen considers, he has in no way taken advantage of Syeha's friendship. The girl isn't naively trusting anymore, after her experiences with the pack runners in her village, but she continues to have an open heart. In short, Syeha would not have befriended him so firmly and deeply unless she had taken his measure, and genuinely valued him as a friend. The djinn boy finds himself holding her hand one day to help her over some shaky steps, and forgets to let go. She fails to object.

On other days, however, Syeha and Amen simply sit in some pretty spot and talk. She finds his independence and resourcefulness learned as an orphan admirable, while he thinks the sweetness in her is something greatly to be treasured. It does give him pause that she is the daughter of Syura, whom he already knows from the adventure at Zephyr's desert home, but it is too late now for reservations, the blue boy privately admits to himself. Either she will be upset, understandably, or she won't.
