CONT--> Cartagh was afraid and hid his face. When he awoke he was no longer in his bed, but in a vast and endless desert. As Cartagh trembled in fear, the old woman came walking over the dunes. âI am your goddess,â she said to him, and as she spoke she transformed into the beautiful deity who he had dreamt about. âAnd you will be punished for your sins.â Cartagh begged her to forgive him but she only shook her head. âYou must find me the purest of pure water or you shall die in the sands.â CONT

CONT--> His beloved Arin was killed in childbirth, and his newborn son grew sickly and died. His crops went brown and dead, and he himself became so ill he feared his end was near. The Goddess of The Night came to him in a dream and told him this. âIn three days you shall die, unless you find me the purest of pure water.â CONT-->

CONT--> The next day she came to him and asked again, and again he refused. It was only on the third day when he said, âFine old woman. I shall give you a drink.â He brought but a drop of water from the well, and dropped it at her feet. âThere, you have a drop of water. Now leave me be!â The old woman struck him with her stick thrice and said, âBe warned fool, no good shall come to you.â And indeed she was right. Cartaghâs life began to be effected greatly by this drought. CONT-->

Once there lived a young man called Cartagh, and he led a good and happy life in a small village. He was strong, and clever but he was also vain and arrogant. When Cartagh was but just a man, a great drought dried the lands. Crops were failing and the wells were drying and Cartagh did nothing to help. An old woman came to him one day and begged him for a drink of water. She had been on the road for days, and still had far to go. Cartagh refused to give her any. CONT-->
