--that I've seen a story begin with the character waking to sunlight on their face, I'd be...slightly less poor XD The point is, it's a very tired cliche that's really hard to dress up as original, and I encourage you all to find more interesting ways to begin stories. Sheesh, if you have to have your character wake up to their average mundane morning in the first sentence, then wake them up with something interesting. Like they accidentally left the window open again last night and they wake up to a bird plucking hair out of their head to build a nest, or to the smell of someone burning breakfast, or maybe they wake up to the sunset because their nocturnal. The people on this site are all so creative, I KNOW you can do better.

Unfortunately it's one that shows up right at the beginning too. I try not to judge a story by its first sentence but...I get tired of seeing this start. The whole 'look in the mirror and describe myself' thing is pretty old too, and granted, it's a little tricky to describe a main character from 1st POV. That second example, though, does have a lot more personality in it than the first XD

Going to have to agree with you on this one! It's one of those cliches that makes me groan. Not as much as, "She looked in the mirror at her bright sapphire eyes and silky, straight, raven black hair," though. The character knows what they look like, they wouldn't think ONLY about the color of their eyes or hair. (Unless they can change their appearance.) "She groaned at her reflection, pushing the black rat's nest out of her blue eyes," sounds much better imo. :D
