Congratulations! You won the first place in my contest: Around the world part 2: Africa! I know I repeat myself but for this doll there is only one word ... SPECTACULAR! The thatched roof and discolored walls of the hut, the clothes and the launches of the girl, palm trees and sunshine in the background, but above all else those magnificent baskets of fruit ... everything is absolutely perfect in this creation! Just phenomenal! Compliments!

Hey there! I wanted to just pop in and say this doll is GORGEOUS! And also, I actually DID find it through the vote page. I think there's something wrong with the programming?

(1/3) The third King of Dahomey (ruled 1645-1685) is said to have originally started the group which would become the Amazons as a corps of elephant hunters. His son (ruled 1708-1732) established a female bodyguard & then developed them into a successful militia. The group of female warriors was referred to as Mino, meaning "Our Mothers" or ahosi (king's wives).

(2/3) Varying accounts say Mino were made up of native volunteers (some as young as 8), the king's wives, foreign recruits & captives; even women whose husbands or fathers complained to the king about their behavior. During their membership they were not allowed to have children or be part of married life (though they were legally married to the king). Many of them were virgins as the regiment had a semi-sacred status.

(3/3) By the mid-19th century, they numbered between 1,000 & 6,000 women, about 1/3 of the entire Dahomey army, according to reports written by visitors. The reports also noted that the women soldiers suffered several defeats but that so called Amazons were consistently judged to be superior to the male soldiers in effectiveness & bravery.

Thanks, Hare787! Yeah, actually the Greek's Amazon myths were based on ancient Anatolian (modern day Turkey) tribes with warrior women. Of course the real so-called Amazons most likely didn't cut off their right breast or give away their boy children. ;-)
